Arrived in San Francisco

Ok, I am here : North America > United States > California > Localities > S > San Francisco

Damn it was hard to get out of SFO Airport. I don't think they want you to leave from there, and I could teach them a thing or two about how to do the information better. I used an hour to find where the damn shuttels where. Well, to be honest - after an hour I gave up and found an independent shuttle with a very nice former-oil driller as the driver, and got myself to the hotel :-)

On the way over I checked for connectivity in at Heathrow Airport (London). I couldn't find any Wi-Fi Hotspot, and couldn't connect with my cell either. I think I figured out what the cell-phone problem was, so might have access when I am going back in a week. (Lets just say, there are several ways to skin a .. ehh.. dog).

San Francisco is nice today, the weather is good and I am about to set out on a walk-about. Will see where the shoes lead me :-) Sitting at an Internet Café 10 meters from the hotel and checking my e-mail. Nice to be able to just hook up the laptop and sit here with my own setup. :-)

The bad news is that there was no hotspot to connect to here in San Francisco. Even if I am on the 25th floor. I can "see" a lot of networks, but there are no Boingo or other kind of networks that will allow me to sign up. Was for a moment tempted to look for some other ways to gain access to the networks I can see, but ended up thinking that its better to keep it clean :-)

Will give you all the heads up on the conference that starts on tuesday. Going to the automat-games museum tomorrow, and will do some video shoots there. Didn't get to install any video-editing tools on the laptop, so the video won't be posted untill I am back home.

On the way

I am on the way. Errhh, that is; I am at Gardermoen (OSL). Norways main airport. Its a little over an hour before the plane leaves for London, then its on to San Francisco.

I was hoping to be able to access the net from Gardermoen, they do have a Wi-Fi hotspot, but the system is "closed". No roaming with my ISP, and I would have had to first go to the SAS Hotel at the Airport to get a 24-hour-access pass. Sounds expensive, and not exactly what I need. I would have been much more impressed if they had implemented a credit card system for gaining access, or actually roamed with Norways biggest ISP.

Oh well, I guess its still early days when it comes to Wi-Fi here in Norway. Going to be interesting to see if I will be able to use the Wlan/Wi-Fi card at all on this trip... :-)

Its nice to have bluetooth and GPRS right now :-)

Dan Gillmor on Journalism 3.0

Dan writes about his recent experience with how integrated weblogs have become already:

Yesterday at PC Forum, I was part of a key moment in this evolution.

I was blogging a session on wireless technology, and wrote something about SkyPilot, one of the presenting companies. Duncan Davidson, SkyPilot's CEO, finished his presentation and sat on the podium, reading on his laptop, while other people talked.

Then, in the Q&A, he corrected something I'd written in the blog. In other words, he'd caught this in near-real time and had better information (he should). I immediately posted another paragraph, which began, "I've been corrected...."

Whoa. I'm still not entirely sure what happened. But I do know this. My journey in journalism hit a pivot in that moment. Maybe journalism itself hit a pivot point, as pretentious as that sounds.

Thoughts from the inside of Microsoft

Tommy Williams: My Philosophy at Microsoft

Tommy works at Microsoft, and has since 1999.

I work for Microsoft. I have worked for the company since June 1999. But it gets harder every day.

I hope Tommy will be able to keep working for Microsoft, even after speaking his mind about the company.

The Oscars

Fun to see Camille (my 12 year old step-daughter) cheering for her favorite film - Lord of the rings. We are watching the direct broadcast from LA right now, in the middle of the night - here in Norway.

Nice to see that the Oscar has a good website up this year, which is actually updated to the minute with the winners of the various categories.

Apple got it again

Apple seems to have understood the power of bluetooth, and doing it right.

Apple - Bluetooth

Apple will start offering the D-Link USB Bluetooth adaper with support in OS X in April. It will be their wireless technology for devices/peripherals.
I have been using Bluetooth between my mobile and laptop for a little while now - First having to use a lot of time figure out how to connect the two (with no help to get from neither Ericsson nor Fujitsu-Siemens, and almost no information on the web). My bet is that Apple will have it right in the first go. The technology should make it very easy to make connection between devices easy, but at the current state of most Bluetooth implementations, it seems like it is still in the beta statges (when it comes to ease of use/setting up).

Hmm, maybe I should go get myself one of those new iMac's..

What to expect from PlayStation 3...

There are hints that the next version of Playstation will be a network connected game platform based on Linux.

At the Game Developers Conference (GDC), an annual trade show for the creative and technological sides of the game industry, Shin'ichi Okamoto, chief technical officer for Sony Computer Entertainment, said research efforts for the PlayStation 3 are focusing on distributed computing, a method for spreading computational tasks across myriad networked computers.

Not a good day..

Not a good day for the net today. Google is folding from the pressure from The Church of Scientology and pulling references to anti-Scientology websites from their websites: Google Yanks Anti-Church Sites. Of course, we can thank the great "Digital Millennium Copyright Act" for the feat.

And in the anti-spam department, another big resource bites the dust - after being targeted for crashing a buggy Lotus Notes mail server in Michigan.

San Francisco here I come.. :-)

Today I finally got the tickets. And its time to start counting down. 10 days left till I get on the airplane on the way to San Francisco. (A new first this time: Flying the HUGE 747).

As usual, it is the FlashForward conference that gets me over the big ocean. (I have not once been in the US without it having to do with FlashForward and Flash).

On the agenda for FlashForward this time: Several interviews with the top people in Flash for Flashmagazine, and helping Ultrashock.com become even better.

Expect a lot of photography to be posted to my gallery, this time - I will also be trying to make some short video clips. They will be posted with the help of Flash MX + Sorenson :-)

More golden quotes from Microsoft
"I'm thinking of hitting the OEMs harder than in the past with anti-Linux. ... they should do a delicate dance," Kempin wrote to Ballmer, in what is sure to be a memorable addition to the phrases ("knife the baby", "cut off the air supply") with which Microsoft enriched the English language in the first trial. Unlike those two, this is not contested.

The bullets aimed Spaghetti Western-style at the feet of the dancing OEMs translate to Microsoft withholding source code, according to the memo.

Packet-relay Radio - Future of wireless networks?

David Isenberg's latest Smart Letter .. is interesting commentary on a number of issues, including a mini-essay on packet-relay networks, which potentially offer scalability to wi-fi:

Wireless packet-relay networks solve the problem of multiple, powerful, overlapping transmitters. A network of weak transmitters (with routers attached) can send a packet a long way without unnecessarily trampling on the spectral commons. Multiple hops replace additional amplification.

Packet-relay radio networks have some other nice properties, too. They solve the line-of-sight problem that restricts single-hop 802.11b transmissions. Multiple hops can get around a large building or over a hill. In addition, packet relay does not have the problems of large, capital-intensive buildouts, because customers own most of the infrastructure. When you want to connect to a packet-relay network, you go down to Radios-R-Us, bring home a unit, and plug it in. When you connect, you beef up the network infrastructure adding redundant routing and increasing the potential throughput of the entire network

Without a thread!

Yeah baby! Finally I am up and running without a thread. Wireless that is. Have been fighting with bad documentation and troublesome hardware - but now I am finally totally wireless with my Fujitsu-Siemens B2547 laptop (with touch screen :-) and an Ericsson T39M Bluetooth mobile phone (with triband and GPRS). Its nice to be able to work totally wirelessly, no wires between the laptop and the phone, and no IR connection to align and lose all the time. :-)

Yeah baby! This is groovy!

Norwegian blog community?!

It took a Taco from Netherland to sum up the Norwegian "weblog community". (If there is such a community that is).

I have never been a big fan of belonging to closed communities, but I guess that networking happens no matter if you want it to or not (unless you have really set you mind to be a loner that is).

And I have to admit that having been on the net since 1993 makes on know a few people on the net, I guess it can't be helped.

So, if you want to know what is going on in the Norwegian weblog community, let Taco from Netherland take you through it:
