Google knowledge

I've been fascinated with Google since they first started offering their service. When they first started all the other available search engines was full of spam and it was almost impossible to find anything useful with them. Google revolutionised search engines with their new approach to search. So ever since I first saw them I have been curious to know how it all works.

Thought I would share some of the resources I have found that speaks about Google and how it works. If you have any good links, I really hope you will contribute them in the comments section.

The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine - probably the paper to read about how Google works, written by Sergey Brin and Lawrance Page (aka, the founders of Google).

How Google Works - is an article by GoogleGuide (not affiliated with Google). It also casts some light on how Google works.

More information about Google and other search engines can be found in my search engines category.

Nikken update II

Just a quick Nikken update: I was told that I had to the 11th of february to remove offending content from my original posting about Nikken, but so far all my e-mails to Nikken asking them for more information about their "copyright" issue has gone unanswered, other than an interesting comment posted from the Nikken UK LTD network to my blog. ; -)

The status right now? I am not going to remove any content from any of my blogs related to Nikken, and that includes comments posted to the original story.

I don't expect to hear anything else from Nikken or its distributors. But if I do, I promise to keep you all updated on the events. :-)

Nikken replies?

I am not sure if this reply was supposed to be an official reply from Nikken. But I thought it was so funny I should share it with you all. Its a comment to my first entry about the whole Nikken ordeal.

Let me quote the comment in full. With all the interesting information:

IP Address: 217.204.127.132
Name: Eckhard
Email Address: a@a.com
URL:

Comments:

Hello,
I am looking thru the inernet today, and I think you are a very sad man that should surely go out and get a LIFE!

Is the anti-Nikken the only thing in your life that you can occupy your time with? I will suggest that you go and find a hobby or a girl-freind.

Eckhard.

Seems like a regular boring flame, and isn't exactly signed by someone wanting others to know who he/she is. But, the poster seems to be oblivious to the fact that he/she left her IP-address behind when he/she posted the comment.

Lets look at who owns 217.204.127.132:

inetnum: 217.204.127.128 - 217.204.127.159
netname: NIKKEN
descr: Nikken UK Ltd
descr: Office
descr: Buckinghamshire
descr: Milton Keynes
country: GB

mnt-by: EASYNET-UK-MNT

So, the question is: Should I interpret the comment as an official response from Nikken UK LTD? ;-)

BTW: Expect another update to the whole story soon.

Banned on CBS: MoveOn's 'Child's pay'.

The Bush In 30 Seconds ad contest held earlier this month resulted in the winning 30 second entry Child's pay that was supposed to be aired during the Super Bowl today.

It seems the Child's pay ad from MoveOn was too much for CBS, and they claim they won't run it because they don't run "issue ads".

Now, it seems CBS has run issue ads before: DaveNet : Is CBS Lying?.

MoveOn has posted the following information about the CBS refusal to run the ad:

CBS is refusing to run the winning ad, "Child's Pay," on the Super Bowl. Watch the ad and join the nonpartisan MoveOn.org effort calling on CBS to run public interest advocacy advertising like ours. Even if CBS won't air the ad, we're not going to let that stop us. During the Super Bowl half time show, at 8:10 and 8:35pm EST switch over to CNN to watch the ad CBS won't air. And let us know you're joining the one-minute boycott

[Update] American Samizdat has a good collection of links to articles about CBS banning the ad.
