Professor Watkins Remembers… new style-squashing track on Soundcloud

Here it is, a new track with a new sound and perhaps direction, but quite distinctly my work. With Three Empaths I began doodling with emulated drum machines and sequencers – with sincere awe and admiration for the very few in the 80´s and 90´s
that managed to make good use of it, and indifference to the countless that could not or would not. I think one barely conscious decision I made were to question “what if” –
what if I applied pressure, tension – plugged it directly and virginally in the mains and
let them rip. The Professor – is a little meditation on barely making the surface of communication, when I read the novel “A briefing for a descent into hell” by  Doris Lessing
for the first time, it reminded me of the exploits of necromancers and spiritists cajoling and
hauling the spirits back to our earth to answer trivial and piffle question, where oh where did dear old uncle Alexander bury the golden watch before he died, and was he faithful to Doris, and so forth. Except the protagonist is a person who has on the surface of things lost his mind and appear unable to interact with anything outside of his feverish introverted imagination; he´s the spirit, and we are made to sympathise with his resistance to the call of the real.

So you´re in a club and you believe you hear a repetitive churn of synthetic for-lack-of-a-better-word dance music; it´s the pall of whitened walls and unpleasantly bright electric light, everyone is wearing white, the air smells of strong antiseptic, generic lavender soap.
But through minute gaps of the reel an even brighter light shines in, twisting, turning, distorting the fabric of the bleak and common scene. Revealing the seams and fixes from
the cutting board, incomplete. I intended a more straightforward cut, I got reeled in, it took
a whole lot more time to “think” this process and translate it into a continuity of sound and
sense. Still a work-in-progress. Wife said the germans would like it. Compared it to krautrock, i.e. Can. I´m not sure I would, for very many reasons, none detrimental to Can.

 

 

I finally decided to renew my account at Soundcloud . It does not quite look and feel like it used to do for users of the service, but it still cut it after a lot of thinking on my part.

The project/ Work in Progress bin is full, figuratively, practically speaking I have a whole lot of minutes, hours, to fill – if that should be my fancy. I should test the quality and feel of most of it, don´t be surprised if tracks will begin to disappear and appear quite different from the originals. For now most of the tracks is still there.

Entered the Soniccouture User Tracks Competition. My Entry; Gardens lit by starlight

Some time ago I added Gardens Lit by Starlight to my Soundcloud page. Now I have decided to share it further on occasion of the Soniccouture User Tracks Competition.

A note on this work in progress: Apart from some audio engineering/ balance and dynamics, I consider it finished, it´s included in the project Cordial/Cranial which in the future will become an album of ambient/soundscape instrumental tracks. I was inspired
to shift from traditional sequencers, synths and programmed drum machines towards solo
instrumentation on the Soniccouture Morpheus . Morpheus is a  Virtual instrument for the
Sampler environment software Kontakt 5 by Native Instruments. It is based on the Morpheus by Freenotes, which is a modern xylophone. For Xylophone music I have very little reference by ear, so I extemporated a whole array of different shifts and movements until I found something that fit with the rest of the track. I am actually quite content with the result, but will give the adaptability and high quality of the instrument some of the credit.

 

 

Biographical fragments i. Sound, Music, Noise

The use of sound to communicate has subconsciously engaged me since early age.
I have been perfectly comfortable about allowing input to come from outside.
The radio, the television set.Melody and rhyme. The beat of the drum and the human heart. All colored in blank spaces in my mind. Eventually my consciousness slipped into places full of sound, and occasional fury, their architechture immediate,elusive and flowing. Palaces and gardens of sand,  seas of subatomic motes swarming. Spaces of strange calm and tension. With no medium to fixate, these audiovisual apparitions appearantly dissolved into silent memory.
Teen age happened. My elders played electric guitar. Some even attacked drums and percussion. Their fingers and knuckles raw and bloody.  Rock, Heavy Metal, Punk, Thrash, Boogie, the rambling Blues. The inner ear got worked over, some intensity in my daydreaming soundvault abated. I am introvert. The first falling out would break my confidence, everyone falled out with eachother, all over the place. Around and about, everywhere was swag,self-destructive behaviour,  and violence. Learn to play an instrument and play in a band? Not likely.
It´s safe to say I was a poor fit with the misfits.
However enstranged, I cared.
From the feverish compositions, ghosts flying through me, – to another
place; did you know your soul has been places your mind will never guess or expect?
At sixteen I discovered Poetry. Dark,Erotic,Metaphysical,Religious,Heterodox.
Automatic writing. Beneath the superhighway of hormones and the flickering of
hope and doubt. Wide eyed. Metre and rhyme thrown out the window with force.
Entire epics doused with petrol and set alight. Whenever focused, a shaman would
sit down on his throne of fur and bone somewhere in the shadows.
Throwing sand in the eyes of the rulers, manipulators, dealers and wheelers.
Two years ago I began fiddling with Logic Express and a MIDI keyboard.
Slowly, as the learning curve flattened out, more or less whole compositions came
through and I had something to manipulate and cut into its own shapes.
Those shapes came together and erected new landscapes.
Sonically I am indeed fond of crafting sound and progressions from chaos.
Nuances, harmonies, melody from noise. The result is frankly electronic music
which is not easily fit into categories and genre.
